Information Technology

Augmenting accounting knowledge with additional coursework in information technology can strengthen performance in core audit roles. In addition, it affords students an opportunity to explore career options with large firms that are rapidly developing information technology audit practice lines. NC State Poole College of Management is well recognized for its contributions to furthering the understanding of this important topic, which creates a unique opportunity for Jenkins MAC students to differentiate themselves in the marketplace.

Overview

Information technology (IT) is the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware. IT professionals perform a variety of duties that range from installing applications to designing complex computer networks, information databases and auditing information systems.

The information technology umbrella can be quite large, covering many fields. Accountants with IT experience have positioned themselves well in the business world to take advantage of many different job opportunities both in the accounting field and more IT-focused fields.

Each of the “Big Four” firms—Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, and PricewaterhouseCoopers—have well developed information technology advisory practices. In addition to the firms above, both Grant Thornton and RSM offer extensive information technology advisory services to their clients.

Curriculum

Students in the IT specialization will take three elective courses in the IT area with wide application to accounting IT issues.

  • MBA 511 – Data Security and Privacy
    Data security and privacy necessary for today’s business environment. Common vulnerabilities, securing data, encryption, policies, privacy management, standards, and compliance.
  • MBA 515  – Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (ERP)
    Information systems that run all facets of an enterprise from accounting and finance, to HR, sales, purchasing and manufacturing. This course discusses steps for implementing these systems as well as core functionality, technical infrastructure and auditing implications. Students will benefit from NC State’s participation in the SAP University Alliance and gain practical experience with the Tier 1 leader in ERP systems, SAP. SAP is the world-wide market leader in ERP systems (and the 4th largest software company overall), used by 109,000 customers in more than 102 countries in a wide range of industries.
  • ACC 545 – IT Audit 
  • BUS 541 – Strategic Risk Analysis Using Excel (1 hr)
  • BUS 542 – Forecasting and Scenario Planning Using Monte Carlo (1 hr)
  • BUS 543 – Creating Management Dashboards Using Tableau (1 hr)
