Business and Industry Track
The business & industry track prepares students to pursue an accounting career in industry.
Students in the business and industry track may be interested in taking the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exam and/or the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exam. The concentration is developed around the skills accounting professionals need to obtain to be successful in the industry. These identified skills also align with the skills tested on the CPA and CMA exams.
The required core and concentration classes align with the skills tested on the CPA and CMA exams and requirements for accounting professionals in industry.
Other certifications the Business and Industry track will help prepare students for are the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) and the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)

ACC 519 – Applied Financial Management

A study of key business decisions made and tools used by chief financial officers (CFO) in their executive management roles. Students will focus on managerial analysis tools (e.g.,business plans,budgeting) and finance issues (e.g. funding alternatives, treasury, and cash management). The course will include management skills related to the CFO, such as negotiations, leadership, delegation, interactions with boards, etc.
ACC 530 – Advanced Income Tax

Federal income tax treatment of corporations, partnerships, estates, trusts, and profit and loss distributions to shareholders, partners and beneficiaries. Introduction to wealth transfer taxes and family tax planning.
ACC 520 – Advanced Management Accounting

A study of how accounting and operating information is used in management planning and decision making. Students will apply advanced costing models and design and evaluate management decision making information systems. Topics will include issues that are appropriate for consideration by executive management and the board of directors.

ACC 580 – Data Analytics in Accounting

This course provides an opportunity to learn and apply various data analytics techniques to a business case to support management’s decision making. This course utilizes analytics tools and technology in an advisory context. Specifically, you will be learning and using Excel, Access and PowerBI tools, as well as Word to summarize your analysis. Soft skills are essential in today’s environment. This course also helps to strengthen these skills including written communication [formal and informal], critical thinking and data analytics.
MBA 518 – Enterprise Risk Management

Integrated approach to managing the risks that can prevent an organization from achieving its objectives, both financial and non-financial. Core elements of an effective enterprise risk management process. Links to management strategy. Risk assessment methodologies.
Electives (12 hours)
Electives will be focused on student career objectives with the option of choosing courses from any of the public accounting track specializations or courses in personal financial planning, advanced corporate finance, investment theory and practice and sustainability and business. Courses are also available through NC State University’s Department of Public Administration.
