Naylea Jacobo spent two years working as a molecular technologist, but realized she hit her limit on moving liquid from one container to another. Looking for a career that required more problem solving, she joined the Jenkins MAC program.
Jacobo found her niche in the accounting field early due to her scientific background. While some classmates evaluate a problem from a financial reporting perspective, she often asks a different set of questions first: What could fail? Where is the exposure? What backup plan is in place if the system breaks? That instinct helped her recognize a fit with IT audit.
Jacobo came into the MAC program assuming that accounting was primarily about tax returns and financial statements. She now knows it`s a broad field that touches nearly every sector. “You really can do anything with accounting,” she said.

Chad Perz might be the first Jenkins MAC student to have a credit on "Keeping Up With the Kardashians."
Perz spent more than a decade working in TV, largely as an editor, but looked for more stability as the industry slowed and his family grew. He came to the program knowing "next to nothing" about accounting but, much like editing, he found appeal in learning how all the pieces of something unfamiliar came together.
His background in media gave him a leg up in ways he didn`t expect. “I’ve been surprised by how much writing there is,” he said. “That background has helped more than I expected.”
Perz`s story is proof that, no matter your past experience, you can find a niche in the accounting world.
