What advice do you have for prospective Poole students?

Be open to different career paths. I began my college experience in the School of Engineering. After my freshman year, I switched to business because I learned pretty quickly that engineering was not for me. I signed up for a few accounting classes not knowing if that was the route I wanted to take. After taking a few accounting classes, I decided I enjoyed those classes and they made sense to me. That’s when I decided to pursue my accounting degree.

Could you give a brief explanation of your current line of work, and what has led you to it?

I am currently in the general ledger accounting group at a large IT healthcare software company. My current role involves employee stock purchase plan and stock comp calculations, intangible asset, and goodwill impairment testing, basic and diluted earnings per share calculations, preparing the equity roll-forward and reviewing journal entries, among other things. Relevant previous experience in a smaller tech company led me to my current role.

What do you believe is your most interesting accomplishment since graduation?

From a career standpoint, my greatest accomplishment since graduating was passing all parts of the CPA exam the first time shortly after graduating from the MAC program at NC State. The Poole College of Management prepared me for the MAC Program, which then prepared me for the CPA exam as well as the job market. Getting my CPA before starting full time at Deloitte allowed me to focus on my career while still having time to enjoy my hobbies outside of work.
