Amid staffing cuts, leadership turnover and political pressure, concerns are mounting that the U.S. tax system is entering a period of deep instability.
Tax experts worry that these developments — combined with things like Trump’s suggestion that tariffs could replace income taxes — could come together to undermine public trust in the tax system.
“It’s on a seemingly weekly basis we see something new that casts doubt on the existing tax structure,” said Poole professor Nathan Goldman.
