Payton Coats

Undergraduate School/degree:

Meredith College, BS Accounting

Background – where are you from originally?

Raleigh, NC

Past work/leadership experience/activities in college

My past work experience includes internships with Williams Overman Pierce; Johnson Lambert; and Thomas, Judy and Tucker. As an undergraduate I was involved in the dance program along with being President of the Accounting Association, Secretary of Phi Beta Lambda, a business networking club, and an advisor for freshman students. I am currently serving as the MAC Organization’s Secretary.

What type of job would you like to have after completing the MAC Program?

I was offered a full-time position with Williams Overman Pierce after completing my internship this summer. I will be joining their team in Raleigh beginning in August of next year as a tax associate.

Do you have any advice or tips you would like to give prospective students looking at applying to MAC programs?

Believe in yourself. Know that you have gotten this far within your undergraduate degree, and you can continue to do so in a master’s program. I am my own biggest critic and certainly did not think I could make it to or through this program and look where I am! You can do it, just continue the hard work.

Why did you choose the NC State MAC Program?

I chose NC State’s MAC Program really because of the reputation the program holds. From the professors to the pass rate on the CPA exam, NC State stood out to me on several levels compared to other universities.

What are your expectations while attending the MAC Program?

My expectation while attending the MAC program is to be challenged. I realize that I will be learning a lot and will be pushed to my limits while doing so. With the difficulty in the course load I know that I will be challenged but prepared for the CPA exam along with the real working world.

What are you looking forward to the most while in the Program?

I am looking forward to the new people I will meet while in the program. Spending four years at Meredith allowed me to become very comfortable with my peers, so coming to NC State excites me. I will be stepping out of my comfort zone meeting, and working with new people, but I know it will be fun!
