How is our 94% job placement achieved?

How is our 94% job placement achieved?

If you’ve been wondering exactly how it is that the NC State Poole College of Management’s Jenkins MAC program actually achieves its 94% job placement rate for its students, then you’ve come to the right place. In this blog post, I will be covering the skill building provided by our career effectiveness course, thriving during the recruiting process, conducting a successful interview, and helping to assure a recruiter’s interest in you.

ACC-600: Career Effectiveness

Once a week, on either Tuesday or Thursday, Jenkins MAC students who are seeking a job meet for their course on career effectiveness. Students who already have been placed in a position are also enrolled in this course, but take a similar, yet different, path. Now at the mid-point in the semester, we have been exposed to a variety of professional growth experiences, including a professional dress course taught by representatives from Brooks Brothers, a day focused on how to turn your first interview into a second, business etiquette, personality test assessments, and mock interviews. Once you’ve combined the skills acquired through these sessions, you’ve got the winning combination for conducting an effective job search.

Recruiting, and How to Stay on Top

As part of the Jenkins MAC students who did not secure a job from an internship following admission to the program enter a comprehensive recruiting process that’s integrated into the academic program. The recruiting process – part of career development – can be quite difficult in addition to the coursework. I will cover the techniques I’ve used to stay on top of recruiting.

Through the Jenkins MAC program’s recruiting process I have learned that time management, personality, and effective ‘know how’ can go a long way. First of all, time management is of the upmost importance when going through the recruiting process.

In addition to the scheduled classes and homework, you need to make time for attending ‘meet the firms’ events, pre-interview socials, and the interviews themselves. In short you need to get a planner or make a schedule of some sort to allocate your time on a daily basis. Next you must make a promise to yourself to stick to the schedule.

Personality goes a long way when meeting with the representatives you’re introduced to during the recruiting process. Remember, these recruiters not only want to see that you’re qualified for the job, but they also want to know that you will be a great fit for their team. Don’t be shy, but don’t be overwhelming. Make sure to communicate sincere interest in each and every firm.

After all, you never know who might be sending the job offer your way. Lastly, you must make sure you have some knowledge of each firm because they will inevitably ask what you know about them. Learn what the firms offer in order to make these things a conversation piece, helping them to remember you specifically.

A Successful Interview & Secured Interest

Several things come to mind when I think of how to conduct a successful interview. Among the most important to me are strong communication skills, the ability to strongly convey your career goals and knowing your skillset. Of the upmost importance are strong communication skills. When you go in for an interview employers are looking to know what it is about you that makes you desirable as an employee. Be confident, comfortable, and well versed while not being overzealous in presenting yourself.

You should also be able to effectively speak about your personal career goals and the skill set that you will bring to the firm. Employers like to see individuals who know what they want out of their career and who are using their specific skillset to achieve such. Being able to communicate this will not only raise interest in you as a candidate for the job, but it will also serve to reaffirm their belief in you as a confident, strong minded individual who is determined to achieve personal career goals in a way that will directly benefit the firm.

In summary, be sure you are personable, confident, and know how to market yourself. These are the things that are taught to us here in the NC State Poole College‘s Jenkins Master’s of Accounting program. When entering the program, I myself wondered how it was that such a high job placement rate could be consistently achieved. Now that I have been a part of the program and recruiting process, it has become evident that the MAC program here at NCSU is paramount for receiving a top notch education and ensuring a future in the accounting industry.
